The Last Stand

October 9, 2017

High speed laps around the Alamo. Cornering over cobblestones at twilight. Eyes on the wheel in front of you, tuned in and focused. The Red Bull Last Stand was a thrill for spectators and competitors alike, and the race  brought in some of the area's best cyclists to Downtown San Antonio this past Saturday. Paragon Training set up a tent near the first turn on the course, and it was an exciting afternoon of socializing amongst the crowds, food and giveaways, and intense racing. Coach Mark Saroni along with two UTSA athletes competed in the event. Qualifying rounds were held throughout the afternoon, with the 50 best times advancing to the Finals to race at night under the lights. Kennedy Cunningham of UTSA qualified and raced in the Women's Geared Final. Saroni raced in the Men's Geared Final. There were three high-speed crashes in the race, one that happened right in front of Saroni. After narrowly missing the pileup and fencing, he worked his way to top 20 before he was pulled from the race.

The Paragon USA Swim Club had its second meet of the season this weekend. The three-day event, Sombrero UNO, was held at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). The meet was a great success for Paragon, as nearly every athlete dropped time in each of their events.

Paragon Training also congratulates its UTSA Triathletes that competed in the Wurst Tri Ever in New Braunfels. Athletes started on "Wet Willy," a 2-story slide, before going into a 300-meter swim, 12.7-mile bike, and 2.5-mile run. Max Jarvie won the race and set a new course record! Kathryn Schroeder and Erick Ovalle each also won their age groups.
