August Athlete Spotlight - Meet April

Updated: Dec 10, 2021

Meet our August Athlete Spotlight, April Smith! April is a dedicated distance runner and triathlete. She has also been running her own business for 27+ years, managing to balance training and work. We're especially proud of her for continuing to persevere during the COVID-19 pandemic: celebrating a 60th birthday, waiting for a race where she can apply all her training and qualify for Boston, and incorporating telepractice into her speech-language therapy business.

Age: 60

Occupation: Speech-Language Pathologist

How long have you been swimming, cycling, running, or doing triathlons? I have always done all three but no races until my first marathon in January 2009.  I started doing triathlons 3 years ago.

Why do you like endurance sports? I have always enjoyed being outside.  Endurance sports allow me to be outside.  I have enjoyed the competition and friendships I have gained along the way.

What is your favorite training or racing event, and why? NY Marathon has got to be my favorite race.  Going through the five boroughs is great, but it honestly is the people along the way – the crowd is amazing!

What is your favorite post-workout or race meal? Bloody Mary’s!  Oops, guess that is a beverage, but it hits at least two of the major food groups. I am generally not hungry after a race, but when I am, avocado toast with eggs!  My coach approves of this more than my first choice.

What is one recent accomplishment you are proud of? Being able to sustain my business through the pandemic through use of telepractice.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to go back to my roots and have property and horses.

What is something no one knows about you?  Dancing on the bar with friends at Coyote Ugly for my 50th birthday!
