February Athlete Spotlight - Meet Carlos Velez!

This month, we'd like to shine the spotlight on Carlos Velez! Not only is he a mortgage lender and branch manager but also someone passionate about racing; in fact, his dream is to one day be able to retire so he can train and race even more. He's also got a pretty cool fun fact at the end, so we're sure you'll enjoy this month's spotlight.

Age: 47

Occupation: Branch Manager / Mortgage Lending

How long have you been swimming, cycling, running, and/or doing triathlons?

I jumped into triathlons during the real estate crash of 2008. A buddy of mine challenged a group of us to race the Big Kahuna Half IM in Santa Cruz. I believe I was the only one that showed up. I made so many rookie mistakes from being stuck in the small ring the entire race, but I still managed a 3 hour split! I caught the bug big time after that.

What aspects of triathlon do you enjoy most?

I would have to say the process and training with my crew. I know it's an individual sport but the process and training for a race is definitely a team sport.

What has been your favorite training or racing event, and why?

My favorite training ground I would have to say is Boulder.

PR in Duluth

What is one recent accomplishment you are proud of?

Back in 2018 I broke the 3 hour mark at the Grandma's marathon in Duluth, MN going 2:57

Stopping during the Boston marathon to say hi to my son. I ran a 3:08. Seeing him on course helped me finish since I had lost motivation at that point.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Retired 🙂 so I can ride and train more.

What is something no one knows about you?

I was a BMX national champion and was featured on ESPN during one of my races. Unfortunately, I was taken out, but I still finished.
