How to Choose a Triathlon Coach

The three traits that matter the most

Hiring a triathlon coach can feel like choosing between bad options 🤷‍♂️. Some coaching is affordable but generic. Some is personal but expensive. A lot of coaches have years of racing but no certifications. Some have all the certifications but they have hardly raced. It always feels like you're sacrificing something.

I've had a coach and been coaching for twenty years now. I've been fortunate to have mostly good coaches. I've also interviewed lots of athletes and heard the priorities they are juggling when trying to hire someone. I think it comes down to three things. If your coach gets these right, almost everything else follows.

1. Your triathlon coach should write personalized workouts

A training plan with your name typed at the top is not personalized coaching. Real personalization starts with understanding who you are: your history, your goals, your work schedule, your family, and the sport where you lose the most time.

At Paragon, our philosophy is person first, athlete second. A good coach builds your season around your life, then keeps adjusting it. We load workouts every one to two weeks, so the plan moves when your schedule does.

What to look for:

  • An intake conversation or assessment before your first workout

  • A season plan built around your A race

  • Workouts adjusted regularly, not a 16-week block delivered all at once

  • Extra attention on your weakest sport

2. Your triathlon coach should qave qualified expertise

Anyone can call themselves a coach. Look for a recognized certification, such as USA Triathlon or IRONMAN®, and a consistent track record of investing in continuing education.

If a coach is willing to invest in themselves, they'll be willing to invest in you.

Credentials are the minimum, though. A good coach can explain why each workout is in your plan. If you ask "why am I doing this?" and the answer is "because it's on the schedule," keep looking.

What to look for:

  • A current certification (USAT, IRONMAN®, USA Cycling, USATF)

  • Experience with athletes at your level and distance

  • Clear explanations of training zones, recovery and progression

  • References from current athletes

3. You should have real access to your triathlon coach

The best plan in the world won't help if no one is watching how you respond to it. Your coach should look at your training files, respond to communication promptly, and answer your questions before small problems turn into injuries or bad races.

Coaching works best as a relationship, and it gets better the longer your coach knows how your body responds to training.

What to look for:

  • Regular check-ins and real feedback on your data

  • Clear response times by email, text, or phone

  • Race planning before key events (we use Best Bike Split)

  • In-person options, like group workouts or video analysis

Questions to ask on a consult

  1. How do you build my plan, and how often does it change?

  2. What certifications do you hold?

  3. How often will we talk, and how fast do you respond?

  4. What happens when I get sick, travel, or miss a week?

  5. How do you plan my race?

Which do you currently use?

  • I have a coach

  • I'm looking for a coach

  • I use a training plan

  • I manage my own training

Do you need a coach, a plan, or a group?

Not everyone needs one-on-one coaching. A training plan adds structure if you are self-motivated and your schedule is predictable. Group workouts give you a coach on deck and training partners at a lower cost. Private coaching gives you all three: a personal plan, expert guidance, and direct access.

At Paragon, you can mix them. Coached athletes get free Tuesday group run practice and discounted group swim. Team members train at track for as little as $2.90 a week. Private coaching runs $200–$600 per month, depending on the sport and coach.

If you're not sure which is right for you, read "Do You Need a Training Plan, a Coach, or Neither?" on our blog, or contact us and we'll help you choose.
