September Athlete Spotlight - Meet Pablo

Updated: Dec 10, 2021

Meet our September Athlete Spotlight, Pablo Bueno! In case you missed our latest Training Tip Tuesday, we asked Pablo to share his advice for time management. Priorities. Flexibility. Commitment. Pablo is the father of two young girls, a triathlete, and a rocket scientist, so time management is key to accomplishing as much as he does. We hope to see him posting rides from the space station one day!

Age: 43

Occupation: Aerospace engineer

How long have you been swimming, cycling, running, or doing triathlons? Running has always been a hobby of mine, but I never ran more than 5 miles until three years ago when I decided to run the SA Half Marathon in 2017. About 4 months later, I got into triathlon and got hooked instantly.

Why do you like endurance sports? Training for and racing endurance events is challenging and I love a good challenge. The distances involved are hard to wrap your head around and I live in perpetual fear of them, which makes me train harder. I believe the biggest rewards in life come from doing hard things and endurance racing has lived up to that expectation.

What is your favorite training or racing event, and why? I am a fan of the half distance. It's long enough to make you hurt and short enough that it can be done in half a day.

What is your favorite post-workout or race meal? When I get home after my long ride or run, my daughters usually make me scrambled eggs with coffee and pancakes. They taste like heaven.

What is one recent accomplishment you are proud of? I recently published a chapter in a book on energy storage. The cool thing is that one of the chapters was written by a Nobel prize winner so my stuff must have been decent enough that he wasn't ashamed to put his name in the same book.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Astronaut. I am currently in the selection process for the next class of NASA astronauts and haven't been rejected yet so there's still hope (keep your fingers crossed).

What is something no one knows about you? I can move my ears.
