Meet this month’s Athlete Spotlight — Brian Payton! A dedicated real estate investor and triathlete, Brian first picked up running as a challenge to grow and lose weight—and it turned into a passion. Four years later, Brian has tackled countless races and recently nailed a huge PR at Galveston 70.3 with support from Coach Amy and Krista. Brian loves the process, even when swimming tests their patience, and finds real purpose in the day-to-day work of getting better. Check out the Q & A with Brian:

Age: 43
Occupation: Real Estate Investor
How long have you been swimming, cycling, running, and/or doing triathlons?
I ballooned up to over 300 lbs in 2018, and to lose weight, I started running. Once I completed my first marathon, I wanted to move on to the next thing, which was Triathlon. I've been at it for four years now and have currently lost 78lbs and completed a bunch of races.
What aspects of training and/or racing do you enjoy most?
I enjoy the process. The day in and day out striving to get better even if it drives me insane (I'm talking to you swimming).
What has been your favorite training or racing event, and why?
To date, my favorite training block and race was Galveston 70.3 in 2024. Lots of work went into that race and training block, and that resulted in an over one hour and a half PR. Coach Amy and Krista were key in helping me accomplish that.
What is your favorite post-workout or race meal?
Rice with chicken and red curry.
What is one recent accomplishment you are proud of?
I went back to school and got my degree last year.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be a fan of a sports team that actually wins a championship. The Bills and Pacers, and Huskies have been close recently. The A's and Sharks not so much. Our time will come, though. Of that I am sure.
What is something no one knows about you?
I am an Ice Cream connoisseur.
Why do you race/train?
I believe in living a life focused on learning and improving, and accomplishing. Triathlon fulfills those for me.
